BIO

Having been involved in physical training exploring the mind-body connection for over 20 years, it is only natural that Tommy Mack found his way to becoming one of the most sought after vinyasa yoga teachers in the metro Detroit area.

At a young age, Tommy was first inspired to connect with health and fitness as his mother encouraged him to participate with her during her daily exercise routines. As he grew older, he shifted from general fitness to competitive athletics. As a former golden gloves boxer, he thrived by excelling at physically and mentally challenging himself, with notable skills in focus and presence, to succeed in a highly competitive sport. Tommy wanted to continue to explore and promote the mind-body connection that had been the driving influence in his life for so many years. For over 10 years, he built a successful career in Personal Training and Exercise Rehab.

In 2010, Tommy began practicing Vinyasa Flow, an incredibly dynamic style of Vinyasa yoga. Tommy was immediately drawn to the deep emphasis and connection to the healing aspect of the breath, allowing for a stronger mind-body connection. He rooted his daily personal practice in the traditional Ashtanga classical sequencing and grew from this base to explore further depth with Vinyasa Flow sequencing. Tommy found the same level of connectedness he had found in the boxing ring with Ashtanga and Vinyasa yoga, an experience he found tested the individual limits physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. He devoted all of his time and energy to evolving his own personal yoga practice. For Tommy, yoga became a transformative lifestyle on and off the mat.

Tommy wanted to share the benefits of yoga by helping others develop their own personal yoga practice. He decided to complete teacher training at Red Lotus Yoga in 2010 under the guidance of Brian Granader. Shortly after completing his yoga teacher training (ERYT 200), Tommy began at many yoga studios and fitness centers in the area where he developed his own signature style of teaching yoga.

After teaching yoga for nearly 10 years, Tommy’s teaching experience, personal practice, fitness and wellness background, and in depth yoga studies prepared him to open his own studio. In March 2019, Tommy opened up his own yoga studio, Practice Yoga Studio, at 2227 Cole Street in Birmingham, Michigan.

Today, Tommy has a well-earned reputation as a sought-after patient, compassionate and disciplined yoga teacher. Tommy's classes are both therapeutic and challenging, awakening the healing power of breath and the calmness in fluidity of movement, allowing the body and mind to find true balance. His love of sharing the benefits of yoga with his students is reflective in every class as he willingly takes the time to nurture students and help them build confidence and grace on the mat. His innate ability to naturally connect with each student, regardless of age, gender, or physical fitness level, has allowed Tommy to inspire students to pursue their own limitless boundaries as they develop their individual yoga practice under his encouraging guidance. Each of Tommy's classes helps his students build strength, endurance, inner calm, vibrancy, and overall vitality.

In addition to teaching various styles of Vinyasa Flow yoga classes, Tommy developed his signature Practice Flow for his studio as well as the Practice + sequence. He also pioneered Vinyasa HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training), a more athletic, aggressive approach to yoga that integrates Vinyasa flow and foundational yoga postures with special emphasis on core athletic high intensity interval training to challenge athletes and yoga practitioners alike. Always pushing the boundaries of what is physically possible, Tommy motivates students to continuously explore their maximum fitness potential both on and off the mat with classes best suited to meet this goal.

Tommy has continued to deepen his yogic studies(ERYT-500) and continues learning from master teachers from around the world. In depth training and intensives in Pranayama, Breathwork, Yogic Philosophy, Sound Healing, Meditation and Mindfulness, and Qigong have greatly continued to shape Tommy’s teaching and personal practice.

Tommy and his wife, Tiffany, live in metropolitan Detroit supporting the local yoga community and raising their two children while running their yoga studio, Practice Yoga Studio.
